The secret to creating your own purpose through work (and getting paid)

The age of big monopolies is over, long live the individual creator!

The age of big monopolies is over, long live the individual creator!

Hey friend!

If you're with me on this journey, you fall into either of the two categories:

  1. You've already found your life purpose and want to scale and systemize your creative footprint in the world.

  2. You have an idea of what you want but you're still doing other work that pays the bills.

In case you don't find yourself in either of the two, hit reply to this email and say hi. I'd love to know how I can help you!

I want to get a larger idea across so this will be a 3 part breakdown:

WHAT NOT TO DO —>> WHY TO DO ANYTHING —>> HOW TO DO IT

Now that's out the way, let's dig into what's been front of mind for me this week.

I had a great conversation with a friend of mine.

She decided to hand in her resignation.

Even though she had a challenging job with decent pay and plentiful opportunity for growth.

She was burnt out.

Tired.

Because outside of career growth and financial remuneration, her work was completely disconnected from her desires, ambitions, and life philosophy.

And I've had tons of conversations like this.

Most people are completely disconnected from work.

Chronically stressed and depressed.

Suffering health issues as a result.

This is the vast majority of people at work.

You could say I'm biased.

I'm not.

I've had the opportunity to talk to tens of thousands of professionals spanning industries, business models, and roles.

This is the fucking norm! And you guessed it. It's the what not to do.

All right Aleksander, you might say.

Let's cut the crap.

You're right.

I hate my job.

The only reason why I'm still doing what I do is because of bills.

The roof over my head and food on the table, kids' college fund,...

Yeah, I hear you.

Money is an actual thing in how our society operates.

So you better have a cash flow to cater to your needs and savings to grow your wealth and do the things you actually want to do in life.

But see, here's the catch.

It's an insidious trap, doing the thing you don't like, so you can have the money to keep doing the thing you don't like.

If money is your only reason for what you're doing, here's news for you.

Stop doing what you're doing immediately.

You need to completely rethink your life strategy and shift your life trajectory or you're in it for a world of unnecessary and prolonged pain & suffering.

I'm not saying quit your job if you've got a family to take care for and no savings to last you a year.

But you'll need to get clear on your WHY:

  1. Having a clear WHY leads to thriving in your work

  2. Chasing financial security and paying the bills leads to burnout

“He who has a why to live for can bear almost any how.” ― Friedrich Nietzsche

And I know.

Change is hard.

It requires energy and consistency.

Our psychology and physiology optimize for energy preservation.

You'll quickly empty your tank of the decision to change if it's based on pure will alone.

This is the cause of thousands of failed attempts at changing your behaviors and habits.

So don't try to stop the Titanic in one screeching halt.

Small incremental change, easy does it:

1. Get clear on what floats your boat

2. Cut activity out of your schedule

3. Dedicate this newfound time towards what you really want

Do this consistently for 1 year and thank me later.

What if your north star is rooted in making money?

Now let's assume you already have a WHY.

If it's some shade of "get rich or die trying", you might be doing it wrong.

Here's why:

Yes, being wealthy and having the money to support your desired lifestyle is a great start.

But taking care of "the money problem" will not solve your non-money problems.

Such as existential questions of what the heck you want to do with your life.

What's that obsession that gets you up in the morning?

Where do you recharge and source your energy to do anything at all vs. transforming into a comfortable couch-shaped carbon being?

Most of the performance coaching and motivational "get shit done" advice only has utility for you if you know what you're going for.

Why put yourself through all the discomfort and growth pains?

WHAT'S YOUR PURPOSE IN LIFE?

And this isn't a binary answer kind of question.

Most people get aggressive or scared and confused when I ask them a variety of this universal question:

What do you desire in life?

This isn't your typical school exam.

There's no right or wrong answer.

It's your continually evolving narrative and the process of clarifying for yourself, what exactly it is that you think (and feel) you want out of life.

This becomes especially pertinent once you embrace your mortal nature.

Once you stop trembling with fear or avoiding your inevitable death.

Because once the fact of your lifespan represents a split microsecond on the cosmic scale of being, you can't help but focus on making it the most epic experience you can (and dare to) imagine.

THE MAGICIAN'S APPRENTICE MODEL:

Here's a simple process to help you refine and design the life that's a resounding F**K YES for you.

As opposed to a boring, meh, kind of fine variety of paying the bills and going through the motions that have you consider blowing your brains out a more compelling alternative.

Look around you.

See the ones that seem to be plugged into something.

Like there's a spark in their eyes, a juicy and creative mojo behind their words.

They appear to be already somewhat ahead (but not too far) along the journey that you are embarking upon.

It's like Donald Trump and his reality show: Apprentice.

The apprentice assumes the role of a disciple.

A student.

Observing the one that had mastered a skill the apprentice desires.

Learning the core of the master's philosophy.

Seeing what they do every day.

How they practice what they preach.

And what their entire identity appears to be.

So here's the cheat sheet:

  1. Be (adopt the identity)

  2. Do (adopt the habit)

  3. Have (adopt the result)

Pay attention to this particular order.

It starts at the identity level.

Who are you really wanting to emulate?

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU MAKE THE DECISION TO START OR SCALE YOUR CREATIVE BUSINESS?

Ok, so let's assume that you're already 100% convinced that you want to build an online creative business on your own terms.

Or if you weren't already, you are now convinced that it's the only way for you forward. You'd rather put a bullet through your head than accept the 9-5 standardized trip from the maternity ward to the crematorium.

You might feel some concerns come to the surface.

Fears and doubt might start rushing in.

Self-worth is put under question:

  • Can I make it?

  • Will people like it?

  • Will I be able to generate revenue from this creative 1 person business?

Have no mistake, starting a one-person business is one of the most effective mirrors known to date.

There’s no one to project all of your insecurities, responsibility, and power onto.

It’s a daily invitation to deal with your conditioning, limiting beliefs, and emotional gunk in your system.

And that's such a beautiful growth path.

Imagine what you'll look like on the other end of this journey 1 year from now.

HOW DO I GET STARTED TODAY?

I'm going to make a big prediction now.

One-person businesses will explode over the next 10 years.

Big monopolies and corporations reached the end of the road.

You're going to start seeing significant shifts in the years to come.

So why not get aboard the train early?
